Having just returned from France, I can say that of the four "brands" I tried - Laduree, P. Herme, Reynaud, and Dalloyau - that Laduree strikes the right balance between finesse, flavor, and texture.

Hi Aaron. Thanks so much! The little macaron tab is a very recent addition. A lot of people were linking to the site because of macarons, so I decided it was time to add an easy clickable image:)

There are three producers on your list that I haven't tried -- Renard, Gosselin and Café Angelina. Damn! I'm going to have to go back to Paris *again*. Sigh. :P

If you do try one of the La Macaronicité recipes, I welcome your feedback. In the US, it looks like Veronica at Veronica's Test Kitchen (kitchenmusings blog) is producing attractive macarons for sale. Maybe you need to do a pan-continental review for North American readers? :)

Duncan,
Thanks for the kind words. I've been looking through your site, and I must say:
(1) The macaron tab in the header is the greatest thing ever
(2) La Macaronicité is awesome
I also read about your recent macaron crawl. We tried all those places except Pain de Sucre when I visited back in March/April.
Our hit list included: Ladurée, Grégory Renard, Gérard Mulot, Dallayou, Fauchon, Pierre Hermé, Jean-Paul Hévin, Sadaharu Aoki, Lenôtre, Gosselin, Café Angelina, and La Maison du Chocolat. Ladurée for vanilla and Grégory Renard for pistachio were my favorites. It was a great trip.
So until the next one I'm left with the macaron wannabes I can find here in the US. Then again, maybe I can try making my own using the recipes from La Macaronicité. Hmm...

I feel a sense of chagrin at only just finding your site (thanks to a tip off from a friend). I greatly enjoyed reading the reviews of the macarons (and more) at Ladurée and Hermé. Sounds like so much fun (I did a less fun macaron crawl in Paris recently, but it involved multiple producers, rather than a stately tasting of only two places).
